PSHE and RSE
PSHE
At St Bede's, our Primary PSHE (Personal, Social, Health, and Economic) curriculum provides the vital building blocks for our pupils to grow into happy, healthy, and confident individuals. While we follow a structured, age-appropriate framework to teach emotional literacy, healthy relationships, and physical well-being, our curriculum is deeply reactive to our local context. We actively adapt our lessons to address the real-world experiences, specific needs, and safety challenges within our immediate community, ensuring our learning is always relevant and impactful. By combining these responsive themes with core lessons on online safety, financial literacy, and resilience, we nurture well-rounded children who understand their own feelings, respect diversity, and are fully prepared for life in the modern world.
We work with a range of external partners to shape our responsive curriculum including:
• Local Police Teams- Officers regularly visit to deliver vital sessions on personal safety, community responsibility, and online safety, helping children build positive relationships with local law enforcement.
• The RNLI (Royal National Lifeboat Institution)- Volunteers provide crucial water safety workshops RNLI Youth Education, teaching our pupils how to stay safe near our coastlines and rivers.
• Local Foodbanks- Pupils engage in community projects and donation drives, learning first-hand about social responsibility, empathy, and supporting families within our own neighbourhood.
•SafetyWorks!- An interactive, multi-agency safety education centre located in Newcastle upon Tyne, England, operated and managed by the Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service
"PSHE education gives pupils the knowledge, skills, and attributes they need to keep themselves healthy and safe, and to prepare them for life and work in modern Britain." — The PSHE Association
We use a range of resources to supliment our PSHE offer including
•Picture News- a leading UK educational subscription service that provides schools with weekly, ready-made teaching resources based on current global and national news stories.
• Newsround- a BBC news television programme made specifically for children and young people aged six to twelve. It explains complex world events in simple, clear language without talking down to young viewers.
• Pol Ed- is a free, teacher-written PSHE, RSHE, and citizenship educational programme developed in collaboration with UK police forces to help schools teach children about personal safety, the law, risks, and consequences.
RSE
Our Relationships and Health Education (RHE) curriculum is fully supported by Ten Ten's 'Life to the Full' scheme, a program rooted in a Christian understanding of the human person. This structured, age-appropriate resource allows us to deliver the statutory guidelines through a beautifully cohesive framework that celebrates the dignity of every individual. Through 'Life to the Full', pupils explore physical health, emotional well-being, and safe, respectful relationships within a context that encourages them to see themselves and others as uniquely made. By integrating this faith-based approach into our broader, context-reactive PSHE curriculum, we ensure our children receive a holistic education that nurtures their hearts, minds, and spiritual growth.
"We are created by God out of love, for love, to love.- Ten Ten
